Traditional Indian Painting


Our traditional Indian painting is as traditional and varied as the land is itself. Since from the prehistoric times, the painting as a concept of art has created in India since the prehistoric times. The very earliest paintings in India was found on the walls of the caves of Bhimbetka that is located in Madhya Pradesh where the prehistoric men incised the scenes from game, the animals and man in the simple geometric lines and colors on the cave walls. Well, these painted geometric designs and symbols have also been found in the pottery items that belong to the Indus valley civilization. The traditional painting in India reached at the highest point in the exquisite murals and frescoes on the walls of cave Ajanta and Ellora.

 

How far, the tradition of Indian art and the traditional Indian painting continued to the medieval period which is remembered for the Persian styled miniature painting introduced by the Mughals. This style also influenced local schools in Rajasthan, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and Kangra. But according to today’s era, Indian traditional painting became a blend of various traditions and culture. Though each one distinct with their own style.

 

Well various paintings are there just like the Pahari Paintings that are other forms of miniature paintings which increased during the period of 17th to 19th century. This is a form of Rajput painting which was evolved in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab states of India and also revealing the various focal themes. Then next is the Rajput painting that was evolved in the late 16th to 17th century and typically showed the Mughal influence. Thus, the various forms of traditional painting in India is however vivid and lively, refined and sophisticated.
